Photographer Steve Marsel, president of Steve Marsel Studio in Somerville, wanted to contribute to the Pan-Mass Challenge, but he wasn't much of a cyclist. He met with Billy Starr who said he’d always wanted to know more about the people who make up the PMC. For two days each year, more than 4,300 cyclists are part of the PMC family, but what do they do during the other 363 days of the year, and what the does the PMC mean in their lives? Marsel set out to answer this question, and with the help of designer Matt Ralph, and writer Ken Shulman, “363/2: For A World Without Cancer” was created. The book tells the stories of 23 PMCers, what brought them to the PMC, and what the rest of their lives are like. “It was my privilege to delve into the lives of the PMC riders featured in '363/2,’ and it has been my pleasure to explore the creativity, the caring, and the commitment these people bring to their jobs, their families and their mission in life,” Marsel said. “They are all so passionate.” In 2005, after photographing more than two dozen PMCers and hearing their stories, Marsel joined the PMC team as a cyclist and has been riding ever since.
