Matthew Bemis's Ride

Why I Ride ...

2014 - my fifth year doing the PMC!  I've lost more people to cancer in this last year.  Nana Hollis will get a leg of the ride where I peddle as hard as I can.  I do the ride to honor my brothers memory and help raise money to cure cancer.  This year will put me at over 20k raised for cancer research!  Seeing and hearing all the stories in the world keeps me doing this year after year.

In 2007, my brother, David Bemis, was tragically killed in a low-speed motor vehicle accident.  He was 31 years old.  In 2010, I decided that I wanted to do something big that would have made my brother proud.  Dave always had a passion for cycling.  So, when I heard about the Pan-Mass Challenge, I decided to sign up.  My goal: to ride from Wellesley to Provincetown (163 miles) in Dave’s shoes in honor of my brother.

In 2010, I successfully completed my first PMC, raised $4,200 for cancer research and learned a lot more about this amazing charity.  Throughout my ride, I was incredibly moved by the people clapping and showing their support of all the riders (over 5000!).  I was excited and eager to continue to take part in this ride going forward to help find cures for cancer.

In 2011, I became a Captain of the Caring for Carcinoid cancer team, and helped new riders figure out how to train/fund raise/commit to the ride.  I also broke my previous record and raised $4470 for cancer research.

Last year (2012) was the 5th anniversary of my brother's passing and my third year riding the PMC.  I broke my previous fundraising record, raising a total of $4914.34!  There isn't a day that goes by without my thinking about my brother.  While my brother did not have cancer, I have no doubt that Dave would be proud of my efforts with the PMC.  Our stepfather Neil is a cancer survivor.  Several other members of our family have dealt with cancer as well.

This year (2013) I will be participating in the PMC's most difficult ride route.  Starting in Sturbridge, MA, the ride to Bourne is the longest and most difficult leg of the event.  Over two days I will ride 192-miles, with a total ascent of 4000 feet!  My minimum fund raising goal for this year is $4500.
