Why I Ride ...
Once again, I'm riding in memory of my brother Michael, who passed away from esophageal cancer in March 2013. Michael was first diagnosed in Spring 2011. That Summer, he went through the full cancer Fun House--chemo, radiation, and surgery. His initial post-treatment scans were encouraging. But, Michael's cancer returned last Spring. He endured more chemo, but it did little to help. Still, Michael kept going. He worked two jobs, and stayed at both until it was absolutely impossible for him to do so. I last saw Michael two weeks before he died. It was clearly a struggle for him to carry on a conversation, but he did so, and never once complained about his condition.
I'm also again riding this year in Memory of my Mom, Magda Greene, who passed away on October 27, 2011, more than 5 years after she was first diagnosed with breast cancer.
Mom endured countless rounds of chemo and radiation, and a small detour for open-heart surgery. She demonstrated a super-human level of strength and courage and never even considered opting out of treatment. Even in her last days, she was summoning every ounce of strength she had and enduring pain I can't imagine to get to chemo, just because that's what she felt she had to do.
And, I'm riding in memory of my PMC teammate Nathaniel Fenollosa. Nat passed away on February 23, 2014. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2011, and came back to ride the PMC in 2012...and I couldn't keep up with him. Nat was only 43 when he passed away. I was awed by Nat's strength, determination, and courage, and his spirit will be with all of us on Equipe Henry this year.
I am also riding again in honor of Henry Fenollosa, the son of my Car Talk colleague, Catherine "Frau Blucher" Fenollosa. Henry was diagnosed with cancer the day before he was born, and began chemo when he was one day old. This year, Henry is turning 8. He's growing up, thanks in large part to treatment he received at Dana-Farber--treatment that was made possible in part by past Pan-Mass contributors.
I'm also riding in honor of my Cousins Carrie and Joe, and many other friends and relatives who have awed me with their strength. Please know that I will be thinking of all of you through all 111 miles.
And, I'm riding for you, because cancer has touched just about all of our lives in some way, and this is one thing we can do together to fight it.
I'm grateful for all the support you've given me and Dana-Farber over my first five PMC's. I hope I can count on you once again.
