Melissa Sullivan's Ride

My First PMC - 2012

Dear Family and Friends,

This year I will be riding in my first Pan Mass Challenge
on Sunday August 5 to raise money for cancer research and treatment. I hope you can support me in my ride.

I’m riding in the PMC Teen ride which begins and ends in Wellesley with a midpoint at Gillette Stadium. I am riding this year for the Patriot Platelet Pedalers and the money I raise will be donated to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Our team also rides to raise awareness for the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center at Dana Farber.  At 14, I am the youngest of 116 members on my team.
I decided to ride this year with dad who is riding in his 13th PMC. Although I didn’t have a specific connection to cancer when I began training for the ride, I recently visited Dana Farber and took a tour of the facilities. When we visited the Jimmy Fund Clinic I was soon met with a wakeup call. The kids treated here, ranging from birth to age 18, included people my age. The waiting room was as inviting as it could be with a play area for young kids and a private corner for teens.
We walked through the Clinic and the treatment area with our tour guide and soon came upon the Family Resource Center, another place for kids and their families to wait for their treatments. We met two girls, both around 7 years old. One girl had a prosthetic leg and the other wore a scarf around her head. Both girls were clearly being treated for cancer. They were playing doctor, placing their dolls on a pretend MRI Machine and taking their vital signs. Everything in regards to the hospital was familiar to them. It didn’t seem fair that these two young girls had to grow up in a life battling cancer.

After witnessing these two girls try to like normal lives despite cancer, I knew my PMC ride was in every way the right thing for me to do. I would raise money to fight cancer and in return the world would find a cure.

I’ve never undertaken anything so challenging. Please support me in my ride to end cancer. Any donation helps.  Thank you so much for your support!

            Sincerely,

            Melissa
