Tom Foley's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Please take a moment and read my story and become familiar with why I ride the PMC!!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.  We all have stories relating to the dreaded disease and how it has taken so many of our loved ones, so I really appreciate you visiting my site and considering donating to the fight against cancer.

In the past my reasons for riding an event such as the Pan Mass-Challenge would be to honor a fallen friend, co-worker or family member.  Some one who lost the battle with cancer but still makes an impact on my life every day.  We all have stories of someone who fits this description, don’t we?  My story would start with my parents who lost their battle with cancer years ago and would continue on with so many more…

This year however, I was compelled to ride for three different types of people;

The survivors, the people who are on the front lines of the battle against cancer, the people who have spent years fighting the disease and years praying for it’s cure.    These people have shown courage, strength, dignity and resilience as they went about or continue to go about fighting the battle.  I ride for you!!!

Then there are the caretakers, the people who either volunteer or choose a profession based on helping cancer patients survive or remain comfortable while they fight…. Doctors, nurses, home health aides or anyone who brightens the day of a person fighting to stay alive or fighting to beat cancer, you, are much appreciated, I ride for you!!!

And lastly, the people left behind… this basically is all of us still here on this earth who have experience the loss of a loved one or seen first hand the hardships of someone stricken with the disease.  We are left to put the flowers on the graves, stair at the pictures and try our best to keep fond memories so vivid in our minds so that we will never forget.  I not only ride for you but I ride for my family as well…

I dedicate this ride to all of the people in these groups and a few specific people as well, Dixie, Marcus, Jimmy, Kathy, Ed, Elaine and Patsy, we all have either fought this disease, took care of someone who has had it or we are the one’s left behind.  These people may never read this story but you have given me the motivation to do this ride.  Please forgive me if you have touched my life and I did not include you in the list…we are all in this together and it is time we all kick cancer’s ASS.

Thank you again for taking the time to read my story and I wish you all the very best!!!!

For those of you not familiar with the PMC here is a little info for you:

On August 4 and 5, 2012, 5,500 cyclists will travel one of 11 routes, logging between 25 and 190 miles over one or two days, through 46 Massachusetts cities and towns. Their collective goal is to raise $36 million for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund and bring the organization's 33-year fundraising total to more than $374 million.

Sincerely,

Tom
